Naos
The most powerful star in all of Human Space is not ruled by human beings. Naos is an ultraviolet blue hypergiant that radiates at an inconceivable brilliance of eight hundred thousand times that of Sol. The star is one of the brightest in the entire Galaxy and has been held by various subspecies and familio-political groupings of Jotuns since the time of the Pleistocene on Old Earth.
Naos is considered the primary habitation of Jotuns in the Orion Arm, and most members of their metaspecies apparently take direction in some capacity from the rulers of this alien realm. Naos is also home to a civilization of humans that are allied vassals of the Jotuns.
Descended from inhabitants of the Pollux-1 trading colony, Naotians are among the few humans that have developed a close rapport with Jotuns, and have adapted to many Jotun modes of thought. Naotians have polycameral minds similar to Jotuns, a form of psi-field existence in which multiple consciousnesses exist in the same mind, woven about each other as strands of a linked whole. Polycameralism is a form of Merism, or faith in split/composite minds. Such entities are effectively immortal, as the individual strands come and go, but the braided consciousness goes on indefinitely.
Naos exists in an uneasy truce with the League of Human Worlds. The existence of major independent realms ruled by aliens in Human Space is explicitly forbidden by the Xenopax Accords, but Naos was granted a special variance from this edict on the basis of the longstanding cooperation between humans and Jotuns dating back to the dawn of the Interstellar Age, much the same as the variance granted to Thuban. Despite this (sometimes checkered) history of trade with Jotuns, the existence of the Jotun Realm of Naos has long been a point of contention. The great wealth represented by the star Naos is far too tempting for surrounding human civilizations to ignore. But the Jotun lords of Naos are also far too powerful for humans to overcome, leaving the star system in an uneasy peace.
